Making your books authentically inclusive takes time, knowledge and experience. You can do it in-house, but it might take time you don't have, or end up being sidelined or forgotten in a busy schedule. What if you do find time but you get things wrong? However, if you outsource, how will you ever learn?
I learned most about making books inclusive when I was able to work with people with more experience than me, and when I was also able to talk to them about what I was doing and get feedback.

When you work with me we work as a team. I'll explain the reasons behind all my suggestions, encourage you to consider various aspects and help you to identify strengths as well as areas for improvement.
Ready to take your books to the next level?
I'm on a mission. I want to create a network of people who can champion inclusion. Not just people with good intentions, but people who understand how to make books authentically inclusive, who know how to do the research to make this happen. Who know where to look for the answers. I've developed two programmes that combine training and consultancy. They take place over 8 weeks, with pre-recorded content delivered weekly, and fortnightly sessions with me.
FOUNDATIONS FOR INCLUSION
For freelancers in publishing (including authors/illustrators). Featuring group support via a Facebook group and fortnightly Q&A sessions.
This is not conventional training. Training where you listen for an hour or two, feel inspired, but when you get back to your desk your inbox and to-do list take over. The drip feed of content, and opportunity to discuss how it applies to YOUR projects, will be transformational.

Other ways to work with me
There are other ways to work with me, but I strongly advise you complete the Inclusion Incubator or Foundations for Inclusion first or alongside any work we do together. Priority will be given to clients who have started or completed the programmes.
Inclusion reads highlight anything that may have crept into a project as a result of unconscious bias, including negative mental health language (which you can read more about in my blog post), problematic descriptions of diverse characters, comments or portrayals that perpetuate stereotypes, ableism and more.

EDITORIAL AND LAYOUT
I occasionally take on editorial work, including commissioning and editorial management, developmental, line or copy-editing.
I am proficient with InDesign and can work provide layout and typesetting, returning print-ready files.
