Lift Your Picture Book List
You've got an amazing picture book list of which you can be proud, and some exciting forthcoming titles. You've made sure that the characters in your books are ethnically diverse, and maybe one or two books include a wheelchair user.
However, you feel in your gut that there's more you could be doing to make your books inclusive. But where do you start? Who do you need to include? What can you represent? And how can you make sure you get it right?
This is where I come in!
I will work with you to review your forthcoming titles and help you to see how each and every one could be made more inclusive or accessible. We can talk through any concerns and potential pitfalls, and overcome them together.
This isn't about publishing different books, or adding 'inclusive books' to your list, but about looking at the great stories that you already have and taking them to another level.
After our session you'll know where to start and will have a clear action plan for your forthcoming list. You'll understand the range of people you could be including, and how to ensure authenticity.
"Opened my eyes to the myriad decisions in a book's creation that determine its accessibility. From discussions around typefaces and spots colours, to shaping the messages embedded in a book's text and artwork. [It] has heightened my awareness of what contributes to a book being truly inclusive."
Anna Ridley, Commissioning Editor
How does it work?
I'll come into your offices (location dependent)* on an agreed date and time, and spend 2-4 hours looking though your forthcoming list (we might need some tea or coffee to keep us going).
We'll discuss actionable ideas for making each book inclusive, and any concerns you may have about getting it wrong. We'll look at inclusion across the list as a whole, as well as in each individual book.
Following the session you'll have a month of email support* from me to ask any further questions that may crop up.
After the session, I'll also provide you with any specific image references discussed in the session to aid with illustrator briefs.
*See note below about location. These sessions can be carried out virtually, but face-to-face is preferable.
What's the investment?
A Lift Your List session is an investment not just for the books we discuss, but for your understanding and awareness of the issues moving forwards.
There are various ways to customise your package, from different levels of email support to further in-house or virtual sessions. Click the custom button to send me an email and we'll work out what your needs are and how I can best help.
*Email support is limited to one email exchange per day, Monday to Thursday, so save all your questions for one email. Emails must be received by 10am. I will aim to respond within 24 hours.
I am based in Wiltshire and can travel approximately 2 hours to offer in-house sessions. Travel costs will need to be covered. For those based further away, in-house sessions may be available by arrangement, or a virtual session can be offered instead.
